Hospital Bystander Service in
Horana.
Hospital bystander service in Horana is usually asked about by somebody who has not slept properly in a fortnight. BetterHands places trained attendants to relieve family carers across Horana, Poruwadanda and Kananwila — from $LKR 4,500$/shift.

The relative who has been at the bedside for two weeks is the one we are here for.
Why bystander cover in Horana is often about the carer.
When somebody from Horana is admitted — locally, at Nagoda, or in Colombo — one relative usually moves in with them.
That is the tradition here and it is a good one. Somebody is always there, and the patient is never left to manage a ward alone.
It works for a few days. Past a week the same person has been sleeping in a chair, eating from the canteen and washing in a public bathroom.
They stop leaving the ward at all, because leaving means the bed is unattended and nobody else can get there to cover.
However, an exhausted carer is a worse carer, and often the next person admitted. Families rarely see that coming until it happens.
Therefore the most useful thing paid cover buys here is not care for the patient. It is a night off for the person who has been giving it.

When the carer has been there a fortnight
Four things that happen to the relative who stays.
These are the costs nobody counts, because the person paying them is not the patient and does not appear anywhere in the hospital record.
Two weeks without real sleep
A hospital chair is not a bed, and a ward is never quiet. Sleep deprivation at that length affects judgement as much as exhaustion does.
Eating badly, or not at all
Canteen food when there is time, nothing when there is not. The carer loses weight across an admission almost as reliably as the patient does.
Their own health let go
Medication left at home, appointments missed, a cough ignored. A fortnight of that turns a well person into somebody who needs seeing.
Nobody able to relieve them
The rest of the family is an hour away and working. Willingness is not the issue — reaching the ward for a full shift simply is not possible.

What a respite shift covers in Horana, so somebody can rest.
A respite booking is a straightforward handover. Our attendant takes the bedside duties for the shift, and the relative goes home and sleeps.
Everything the family carer was doing continues — feeding, toileting, repositioning, watching — carried out by somebody trained and rested.
Nothing clinical is touched. The ward team keeps every clinical responsibility, exactly as before.
- Full handover from the family carer at the start of the shift
- Feeding, toileting and repositioning continued without a gap
- Ward staff fetched promptly whenever something changes
- The round attended and instructions written down for the family
- The carer free to leave the hospital entirely, not just to step outside
- A written account at handover back, so nothing is lost between them
Straight answers
Respite ward cover in Horana, in brief.
Who is a respite shift actually for?
The relative who has been living at the bedside. Our attendant takes over the same duties for a shift so that person can go home, sleep properly and eat a real meal before returning.
How often do families book it?
Commonly one night a week, sometimes two during a long admission. Even a single proper night of sleep changes how well a family carer copes with the fortnight around it.
Will the patient mind an unfamiliar person?
Usually less than the family fears, particularly if the handover happens with the relative present. Where a patient is very anxious we suggest starting with a daytime shift rather than a night.
What we provide
Respite on the ward, and respite at home.
The family carer does not stop being exhausted at discharge. These pages cover the same relief once everybody is back in Horana.

How it works
From a fortnight in a chair to one proper night of sleep.
Tell us who has been staying
Which relative, for how long, and what they have been doing at the bedside. The handover is built from that rather than from a generic task list.
Start with one night
Most families book a single night to see how it goes. It is the cheapest possible test of whether the arrangement suits the patient.
A verified attendant is matched
Checked and referenced before placement, and chosen for calm rather than briskness. The profile reaches you first.
Handover with the relative present
The family carer introduces the attendant and explains the routine. Ten minutes spent on that removes most of the patient’s anxiety about it.
Repeat it before they collapse
One night helps. A regular night each week is what actually keeps a family carer standing through a long admission, and it is worth booking in advance.

FAQs
Hospital bystander service in Horana — questions families ask.
Cover is priced by shift length rather than staff grade. A six-hour shift is LKR 4,500/shift, a twelve-hour shift is LKR 5,500/shift and continuous cover is LKR 6,500/day. Poruwadanda, Kananwila and Munagama carry no travel supplement.
That is exactly what a respite shift is for. Our attendant takes the bedside duties for six, twelve or twenty-four hours so she can go home, sleep and eat properly before coming back.
Less often than families expect, especially if the handover happens while your sister is still there. Where a patient is particularly anxious we suggest starting with a daytime shift instead.
We aim for it, and for respite bookings it matters more than usual. A familiar face each week is easier on the patient and makes the handover far quicker.
The local district hospitals, Nagoda, and the Colombo wards where more complex cases are sent, subject to each ward’s own rules on attendants staying overnight.
The exhaustion usually comes home too. Elderly care and 24-hour care both have Horana pages, and both exist largely to relieve the relative who has been doing everything alone.
Relief on the ward, or relief at home?
A respite shift buys the family carer a night. Once your relative is discharged the same person usually needs relieving again at home, which is what the elderly care page for Horana is about.
