Why travellers in Sri Lanka need hospital support.

Sri Lanka has good doctors and well-run hospitals. Even so, a hospital stay here works a little differently from the one you may know at home.

Families play a big part in care. Many wards expect a relative to stay with the patient, to help with meals and to keep watch at night.

Visitors rarely have that. A partner may be the only person with you, and they need to sleep, eat and deal with insurers too. Tourist hospital support takes that weight off them.

That is the gap tourist hospital support fills. For example, a solo backpacker after a scooter accident gets someone in the chair beside them. An older couple gets the help one partner cannot give alone.

  • An English-speaking attendant at your bedside
  • Day and night hospital support, 24 hours
  • Help with meals, washing and moving safely
  • Recovery support at your hotel after discharge
  • Daily updates for your family back home

Alone on a foreign ward

What makes a hospital stay hard for a tourist.

None of this is about poor care. It is about being a visitor in a system built around families who live nearby.

Wards that expect a relative

Many Sri Lankan wards are staffed on the assumption that family stays at the bedside. A traveller has nobody to fill that chair.

A language gap at the worst moment

Doctors usually speak English. However, much of the bedside routine happens in Sinhala or Tamil, and small requests get lost.

Long nights with no one to ask

One nurse covers many beds overnight. If you cannot reach the bell, or cannot explain what you need, you simply wait.

Family thousands of miles away

Your family hears second-hand news across time zones. Flights are expensive and may arrive after the worst is over.

From the ward to the airport

What our tourist hospital support covers in Sri Lanka.

Your trip does not stop at the hospital door, so neither does tourist hospital support. The same attendant can stay with you from admission to departure.

Hospital support for tourists on the ward

The attendant sits with you through the day and the night. They help you eat and drink, wash, use the toilet and change position. They note down what the consultant says on the round and pass it on, so nothing is lost.

Recovery support at your hotel

Discharge often comes before you feel strong. The attendant comes back to the hotel with you. They help with meals and medicines on time, and stay close while you rest. As a result you are not alone in an unfamiliar room.

Travelling on, or flying home

Some travellers continue their trip once they are well enough, while others head straight home. Either way, the attendant can travel with you, help at each step and see you safely to your transport.

Nothing medical belongs to the attendant. Medicines, drips, dressings and decisions stay with the hospital team. As a result the ward gains a helpful pair of hands, never a second opinion.

Local families use the same idea every day. Our hospital bystander service in Sri Lanka places trained attendants on wards across the island. Tourist hospital support adds fluent English, hotel care and help with onward travel.

Straight answers

Tourist hospital support, in brief.

What is tourist hospital support?

A trained attendant who stays at your bedside while you are in a Sri Lankan hospital. They help with meals, washing and moving, call the nurses when needed, and keep your family abroad informed. It is the job a relative would do, if one were here.

Who is it for?

Anyone visiting Sri Lanka who is admitted to hospital without family nearby. That includes holidaymakers, backpackers, business travellers and older visitors. It also covers the days after discharge, when you may be weak and alone in a hotel room.

How do I arrange it from a hospital bed?

Send one WhatsApp message with the hospital, the ward and your name. We reply, confirm the package and the price, and match an attendant. You do not need to fill in forms or visit an office.

Clear daily rates

Tourist hospital support prices in Sri Lanka.

Tourist hospital support comes in two packages, both with 24-hour cover. You pay one daily rate, and we confirm the total for your dates in writing first.

Where travellers need us most

Hospital support for tourists across Sri Lanka.

Most visitor admissions happen in three places: Colombo, the airport side and the south coast. Tourist hospital support is always subject to each ward’s own rules on attendants.

Colombo

Where most serious admissions end up, and where the large private hospitals are. Travellers are often transferred here from elsewhere on the island.

  • National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Colombo
  • Asiri Central
  • Nawaloka Hospital
  • Lanka Hospitals
  • Durdans Hospital

Negombo and the airport side

Close to Bandaranaike International Airport. Many visitors fall ill in their first or last days here, often in an airport hotel.

  • District General Hospital Negombo

Galle and the south coast

The beaches, the Fort and the surf breaks. Road accidents and water injuries along this coast are usually treated in Galle.

  • Teaching Hospital Karapitiya, Galle
  • Asiri Hospital Galle

FAQs

Tourist hospital support in Sri Lanka — questions travellers ask.

The International Bystander package starts from LKR 8,000 a day (about USD 24). The International Premium Bystander package starts from LKR 12,000 a day (about USD 36). Both are 24-hour cover, and taxes are added where applicable. We confirm the total for your dates in writing before you pay anything.

Yes. The International Bystander speaks everyday English, enough for meals, comfort and practical needs. The International Premium Bystander is NVQ-qualified and speaks fluent English, which matters more after surgery or during a long stay.

For an urgent admission we usually place an attendant within 24 hours, and sooner on wards we already staff. Send us the hospital, the ward and a contact number on WhatsApp, and we take it from there.

Most Sri Lankan wards expect a family member to stay, and accept our attendants in that role. Rules on overnight stays and visitor numbers differ by hospital and ward. We always work within what the ward sister allows.

No. An attendant helps with meals, hygiene, toileting, moving about and keeping you company. Medicines, drips, dressings and medical decisions stay with the hospital doctors and nurses at all times.

Some travel insurance policies refund non-medical support during a hospital stay, and many do not. Check with your insurer first. We give you an itemised invoice with dates and daily rates for any claim.

Yes. Both packages can continue at your hotel, including the days before you are fit to fly home. The International Premium Bystander can also travel with you within Sri Lanka; you then cover their transport, meals and overnight accommodation.
