What “caregivers near me” really means here.
In Sri Lanka there is no branch to walk into. Home care travels the other way — the caregiver comes to you. So the useful question is not whether an office sits nearby, but whether a vetted caregiver lives close enough to arrive reliably, every day, including the difficult ones. The exception is 24-hour home care in Sri Lanka, where the caregiver stays at the house and distance stops counting.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Western Province holds the largest share of the country’s population, according to the Department of Census and Statistics, and it is also where traffic makes a fifteen-kilometre journey unpredictable. A caregiver matched from the wrong side of the city is a rota problem waiting to happen.
Therefore BetterHands maps every caregiver on our roster to the area they actually live in. When a family in Nugegoda or Ja-Ela calls, we are not asking who is free — we are asking who is free and nearby. If the honest answer is nobody, we say so instead of sending someone on a commute that will collapse in a month.
- Proximity first. We match by area before anything else, because attendance is the foundation every other part of care sits on.
- One rate everywhere. The daily rate does not change by district. There is no suburban loading and no distance surcharge on the invoice.
- An honest no. Where we cannot staff a town properly today, we tell you on the first call rather than three days before care starts.
- Language matched too. Sinhala, Tamil and English-speaking caregivers, matched to how your parent actually speaks at home.

Check your area
Caregivers near you — district by district.
Find your town below. These are the areas where BetterHands genuinely places caregivers today — not a wish list. If your town is missing, one call confirms whether we can reach it.
Colombo District
Our operations office is in Kotte, inside the district
Our deepest roster. Most Colombo placements go to a caregiver already living inside the district, so the journey to your gate is a short one.
Gampaha District
Our registered head office is in Kadawatha, inside the district
Staffed from within Gampaha rather than dispatched across the Kelani bridge, which is what keeps a 7am start reliable on a weekday.
Kalutara District
Reached down the coast road and the Southern Expressway
A smaller local roster, so we confirm the exact town before promising a start date rather than after.
Galle District
Southern Province coverage, opened on demand from families there
Placements are matched locally in and around Galle — not run from Colombo, which two hours of expressway would make unworkable.
The part nobody explains
Why distance decides whether local care actually happens.
Every family we meet has the same worry, and it is rarely about skill. It is about whether the caregiver will be there tomorrow. Attendance is the whole service — a brilliant caregiver who arrives at nine when medication was due at seven has not delivered care.
Distance is the biggest predictor of that failure. A placement that requires two buses and a train will hold for a fortnight, then start slipping. However, a caregiver from the next lane simply walks in. As a result, we treat the map as a clinical input, not an administrative one.
For families comparing options, this is also where a private arrangement quietly fails. An individual hired directly has no cover on the day they fall ill. A placement through BetterHands does — a replacement caregiver comes from the same local pool, at no extra cost.
The commute decides attendance
A caregiver crossing Colombo twice a day will eventually be late, and the mornings they are late are the mornings medication is due. Matching by area removes the variable entirely.
Early starts only work locally
A 6am start means leaving home at 4.30am if the placement is across the district. Rosters built that way do not hold for six months, whatever anyone promises in the first week.
Live-in changes the maths
For live-in placements the caregiver stays at the home, so distance stops mattering — which is why we can cover towns where a daily commute would never be realistic.
Local knowledge is care knowledge
A caregiver from your area knows the nearest pharmacy, the three-wheeler stand, and which road floods first. That knowledge shortens every small emergency.
Before anyone starts
How to check a caregiver near you is genuinely vetted.
Most caregiver hiring in Sri Lanka still happens by word of mouth — a neighbour’s cousin, a name passed along at the clinic. That works until it does not, and the family carrying the risk is usually the one least equipped to check.
Use the four checks on the right whoever you hire, including us. They take an afternoon and they are the difference between a vetted caregiver and a stranger with your parent’s house keys. For example, a reference you actually telephone will tell you in ninety seconds what a written letter never will.
BetterHands completes all four before a placement begins. Our clinical nurses are PHSRC-registered, every caregiver is background-checked and reference-verified, and each family is given a named coordinator. Where clinical work is involved, see home nursing care in Sri Lanka— that is a nurse’s job, not a caregiver’s.
1. A National Identity Card you can keep a copy of
Photograph the NIC and keep it. Any caregiver unwilling to hand it over at the door has told you everything you need to know before the first shift begins.
2. A police or grama niladhari character check
A grama niladhari certificate confirms the address they actually live at. It is the single easiest local check to run, and the one most private arrangements skip.
3. Two references you can telephone yourself
Not a written letter — a number that answers. Ask the previous family one question: did the caregiver turn up on the days it was hardest to turn up?
4. A named coordinator who answers at 2am
An agency that cannot be reached out of hours is an agency you are alone with at the moment care actually goes wrong. Ask for the number before you sign anything.
How it works
Getting a caregiver near you, in four steps.
From your first call to a matched local caregiver at the door — with the area check happening first, not last.
Tell Us Your Area
Give us your district and the nearest town or landmark. We check it against the caregivers already living there and tell you honestly whether we cover it.
Free Home Assessment
A coordinator visits your home — no charge, no obligation — to understand the need in person, see the house, and work out the hours that actually matter.
Local Caregiver Match
We match on proximity, language, and experience with the specific condition. You meet the caregiver before anything is confirmed.
Placed Within 72 Hours
Care begins with daily check-ins from our team. If the match is wrong, the replacement comes from the same local pool — unlimited for members.
Transparent pricing
The same rate, in every district we cover.
One annual membership covers coordination, payroll, and unlimited caregiver replacements. After that you pay a flat daily rate for the level of care you need — with no distance loading, wherever in our coverage you live.

Placements are booked for a minimum of 15 days and billed in 15 or 30-day cycles, whichever you choose at the start. Hospital bystander cover is priced by shift length instead, with its own shorter minimum — see that service page for its packages. A free care assessment is provided before any commitment.
A one-way transfer for the caregiver is arranged at the start of placement.
Quick answers
Caregivers near me, answered simply.
What is a caregiver in Sri Lanka?
A caregiver supports daily living at home — companionship, personal care, mobility help and supervision. Families also call the role a caretaker or attendant. It is non-clinical work: injections, wound dressing and IV care belong to a registered nurse instead.
How do I find a caregiver near me quickly?
Call an agency that already staffs your district and give them your town on the first call. BetterHands checks your area against its local roster immediately, arranges a free home assessment, and places a matched caregiver within 72 hours of that visit.
Are caregivers available outside Colombo?
Yes. BetterHands places caregivers across the Gampaha, Kalutara and Galle districts as well as Colombo. Coverage is confirmed town by town rather than promised island-wide, because a caregiver has to live near enough to arrive every single day.

Frequently asked questions
Finding caregivers near you in Sri Lanka.
The questions Sri Lankan families ask us most before arranging a local caregiver.
Tell BetterHands your district and the nearest town or landmark, and we check that against the caregivers already living in that area. A coordinator then visits your home free of charge to assess the need in person. If we place caregivers where you live, we say so on that call; if we do not yet cover your area, we tell you plainly rather than sending someone on a two-hour commute.
BetterHands covers the Colombo district in full — Colombo 01 to 15, Nugegoda, Rajagiriya, Battaramulla, Kotte, Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa, Maharagama and Kaduwela — plus the Gampaha district including Negombo, Ragama, Kadawatha, Wattala and Ja-Ela, the Kalutara district including Panadura, Kalutara town and Horana, and the Galle district. Coverage beyond these areas is confirmed case by case.
BetterHands places a matched caregiver within 72 hours of the assessment visit in the areas we cover. The free assessment itself is usually arranged within a day or two of your first call. Urgent cases — a discharge date already set, or a family carer who has to travel — are prioritised, so tell the coordinator the deadline on the first call.
We match by proximity wherever the roster allows, because a caregiver who lives near your home arrives on time in the rain, on a strike day, and at six in the morning. Where a live-in placement is arranged, the caregiver stays at the home, so the daily commute stops mattering. We tell you at matching which of the two applies to your placement.
Ask for four things before anyone starts: a National Identity Card you can photograph, a police or grama niladhari character check, two contactable references from previous families, and a named company coordinator who is accountable if the placement fails. BetterHands completes all four before placement, and our clinical nurses are PHSRC-registered.
The daily rate is the same in every district we cover — there is no distance loading and no suburban premium. Where a placement sits at the edge of our coverage and travel is genuinely long, the coordinator raises any transport contribution with you before the caregiver is confirmed, never afterwards on an invoice.
