A settled community on its own clock

Why Adelaide Families Arrange Home Care in Sri Lanka.

Adelaide holds an established Sri Lankan community concentrated in the northern suburbs, around Mawson Lakes, Salisbury, Parafield Gardens and Golden Grove.

Work here leans towards healthcare, the universities and the defence and manufacturing sector, and housing costs have kept families in the city rather than pushing them out.

It is a stable community rather than a fast-growing one. That means many households have been here long enough for parents in Sri Lanka to have aged considerably, which is when professional home care becomes the question.

  • A long-settled community where parents have been ageing at a distance for years
  • Parents who never emigrated, so no Australian entitlement applies to them
  • Healthcare and shift work that makes a fixed calling time awkward
  • Families who have already tried informal arrangements in Colombo

Four hours ahead, and half an hour of its own

Calling Colombo from Adelaide: Finding the Window.

Adelaide runs on Central Standard Time, four hours ahead of Colombo and five over the South Australian summer. It sits half an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne, which is a small oddity with real consequences.

Your evening, their afternoon

Seven in the evening in Adelaide is three in the afternoon in Colombo. Your parents are mid-afternoon, unhurried, and the day carer is well into the shift.

Your morning works too

Eight in the morning here is four in the morning in Colombo, which is too early. Wait until mid-morning and you reach a household already awake.

The half-hour catches families out

Because Adelaide is thirty minutes behind Sydney, advice written for the eastern states is always slightly wrong here. We set your window against Adelaide time, not AEST.

Why we set the window against your clock, not Sydney's

Most guidance about calling Sri Lanka from Australia is written for the eastern states. In Adelaide it is out by half an hour, and in summer the daylight saving change compounds it further.

We confirm the exact reporting and calling window against South Australian time at the assessment, so nobody is working from a number that was right in Melbourne.

Agreed in advance, not invented at 3am

Decisions to Make Before You Need Them.

Adelaide is four hours ahead, which sounds close until something happens at two in the morning Colombo time. These are settled first.

Who we ring first

One named person in Adelaide, and one contact in Sri Lanka who can physically attend. Both agreed and written down before the placement begins.

Which hospital

Named in advance with a second choice, so the carer never has to guess and you are not deciding under pressure overnight.

What proceeds without you

Healthcare shifts do not always let you answer. We agree what the carer and our office may decide alone.

Where our Adelaide families live

Serving Sri Lankan Families Across Adelaide.

The care always happens in Sri Lanka. What changes across Adelaide is chiefly how long a family has been here, and how long their parents have been managing alone.

Mawson Lakes

Close to the university and technology park, and where a good share of our Adelaide enquiries begin.

Salisbury

Long-established in the northern suburbs, with a broad mix of work and multi-generational households.

Parafield Gardens

Densely settled and closely networked, where recommendations travel quickly between families.

Golden Grove

North-eastern and more suburban, with younger families whose parents are often still independent.

Before you commit

What Adelaide Families Ask Before They Commit.

Will My Aged Care fund care in Sri Lanka?

No. Australian aged care is federally funded for care delivered inside Australia, after an ACAT assessment. A parent living in Colombo has never been an Australian resident, so the care there is a private arrangement from the outset.

Does the half-hour difference from Sydney matter?

Only in that generic advice is always slightly wrong here. We set your calling and reporting window against Adelaide time at the assessment, which removes the problem entirely.

Who is accountable if standards slip?

BetterHands is. Carers are employed and payrolled through us, not introduced and forgotten. One team owns the placement, there is a number to ring, and the replacement guarantee has no cap.

Where the care actually happens

Island-wide coverage in Sri Lanka.

BetterHands coordinates carers from our office in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, just outside Colombo. Placements run island-wide, including Kandy, Galle, Negombo, Matara and Jaffna.

No district loading applies. A placement two hours from the capital costs the same daily rate as one in Colombo 7. Families discharged from the National Hospital of Sri Lanka or private hospitals are transitioned home directly.

  • Medication reminders and general supervision
  • Simple meals and refreshments
  • Short walks and light activities (if appropriate)
  • Day-to-day assistance and emotional support

  • PHSRC-registered clinical nursing
  • Wound care, injections, and IV therapy
  • Catheter, NG tube, and post-operative care

Daily rates are charged in addition to the one-time annual registration fee of LKR 20,000. The same daily rates apply to day care, night care and live-in support — no shift premiums, no travel supplements for any district. Hospital bystander cover is priced by shift length instead — see that service page for its packages. A free care assessment is provided before any commitment.

A one-way transfer for the caregiver is arranged at the start of placement.

Families we look after

Trusted with the people who raised us.

Questions from Adelaide

Frequently Asked Questions from Adelaide Families.

Yes. BetterHands runs a free assessment with your parents in Sri Lanka, matches a carer, and sends a written welfare update after every shift. You approve the plan and pay from Australia without travelling.

Four hours ahead, widening to five over the South Australian summer. Adelaide also sits half an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne, so eastern-states advice does not quite fit.

No. Most itineraries connect through Melbourne, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, and run around eighteen to twenty-four hours door to door depending on the connection.

No. Australian aged care is federally funded for care delivered inside Australia, after an ACAT assessment. A parent living in Colombo has never been an Australian resident, so the care there is a private arrangement from the outset.

Only if your parent receives it themselves, which requires Australian residency history. A parent who never emigrated has no claim. Portability rules for your own pension are a separate question for Services Australia.

Most placements begin within seventy-two hours of an approved care plan. Where a parent is being discharged from hospital we work to the discharge date instead.

We replace them, with no cap on replacements inside your membership year. Carers are employed by BetterHands rather than introduced, so a change is ours to manage.

Yes. Language is a formal matching factor alongside cooking, religious observance, temperament and medical experience, agreed before the placement begins.

BetterHands nurses are registered with Sri Lanka's Private Health Services Regulatory Council. Australian aged care is federally funded and delivered inside Australia only. Confirm your own position with My Aged Care and Services Australia, as circumstances vary.

Four hours ahead is still a different day.

Adelaide is closer to Colombo than most of the diaspora, which makes the gap easy to underestimate. Four hours is still enough that everything urgent happens while you are asleep.

A vetted carer in the house. Home nursing when the condition calls for it. A written update after every shift, timed against your clock rather than Sydney's.

The assessment is free and commits you to nothing. Occasionally we tell a family their parents are coping better than the phone calls suggested. Either way the window is set against your clock.
