A technology community, dispersed down the peninsula
Why San Francisco Bay Area Families Arrange Home Care in Sri Lanka.
The Bay Area holds a substantial Sri Lankan population spread from Fremont through Milpitas, San Jose and Sunnyvale rather than gathered in one district.
The work is overwhelmingly technology, with the long hours and unpredictable release cycles that go with it. Many households arrived for a specific role rather than to join family.
Combine dispersal, long hours and the widest time gap on the American mainland, and the result is families who genuinely cannot check in casually. That is what professional home care answers.
- Households spread from Fremont down through the South Bay
- Parents who never emigrated, so no US entitlement applies to them
- Long and unpredictable working hours in the technology sector
- A twelve-hour gap that removes casual check-in calls entirely

Twelve and a half hours, nearly inverted
Calling Colombo from San Francisco Bay Area: Finding the Window.
The Bay Area runs on Pacific Time, twelve and a half hours behind Colombo in summer and thirteen and a half in winter. Consequently your day and your parents’ day barely overlap at all.
Your evening, their morning
Eight in the evening here is half past eight the next morning in Colombo. Your parents have woken and eaten, and the day carer has arrived.
Your morning is their evening
Eight in the morning in Fremont is half past eight in the evening in Colombo. It works, though it lands at the end of their day rather than the start.
The update lands before dawn
The Colombo shift closes around six in the evening, half past five that morning here. It is on your phone before the alarm, which is the only reliable handover at this gap.
Living on opposite halves of the clock
The Bay Area is the widest gap of any American city we serve. There is no hour where both households are comfortably awake and unhurried, so a fixed daily call is rarely sustainable.
Most families here settle into reading the written update each morning and holding one proper call at the weekend. It is a better arrangement than a rushed nightly call that tells nobody very much.
Agreed in advance, not invented at 3am
Decisions to Make Before You Need Them.
With twelve and a half hours between you, anything urgent will happen while the Bay Area sleeps. The plan has to work without you.
Who we ring first
One named person in California, and one contact in Sri Lanka who can physically attend. Both agreed and recorded before the placement begins.
Which hospital
Named in advance with a second choice, so nobody is choosing a hospital while you are asleep and unreachable.
What proceeds without you
At this gap, waiting for approval can cost most of a day. We agree in advance exactly what can be decided without you.

Where our Bay Area families live
Serving Sri Lankan Families Across San Francisco Bay Area.
The care always happens in Sri Lanka. What changes down the peninsula is mostly the employer, and how far a household sits from anyone else in the same position.
Fremont
The largest South Asian concentration in the Bay and where most of our enquiries here begin. Long-established and well networked.
San Jose
The heart of the South Bay, overwhelmingly technology-employed, with families spread widely across the city.
Sunnyvale
Dense and corporate, with many households arriving directly for a role rather than through relatives.
Milpitas
Between Fremont and San Jose, with a mix of longer-settled families and recent arrivals.
Before you commit
What San Francisco Bay Area Families Ask Before They Commit.
Does Medicare cover care for my parents in Sri Lanka?
No. Medicare almost never pays for care outside the United States, and it covers you rather than a parent overseas. Neither California nor any federal programme funds home care in Colombo, so the arrangement is private throughout.
The time gap is twelve hours. Is that workable?
Yes, with a different rhythm. Bay Area families typically read the written update each morning and hold one longer call at the weekend, rather than attempting a daily call nobody has time for.
Who is accountable if standards slip?
BetterHands is. Carers are employed and payrolled through us, not introduced and forgotten. One team owns the placement, there is a number to ring, and the replacement guarantee has no cap.
Where the care actually happens
Island-wide coverage in Sri Lanka.
BetterHands coordinates carers from our office in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, just outside Colombo. Placements run island-wide, including Kandy, Galle, Negombo, Matara and Jaffna.
No district loading applies. A placement two hours from the capital costs the same daily rate as one in Colombo 7. Families discharged from the National Hospital of Sri Lanka or private hospitals are transitioned home directly.

Questions from San Francisco Bay Area
Frequently Asked Questions from San Francisco Bay Area Families.
Yes. BetterHands runs a free assessment with your parents in Sri Lanka, matches a carer, and sends a written welfare update after every shift. You approve the plan and pay from California.
Twelve and a half hours in summer and thirteen and a half in winter, with Colombo ahead. It is the widest gap of any American city we serve.
No. Routings run west across the Pacific through Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul or Tokyo, or east through the Gulf. Either way the journey runs well past twenty-four hours.
No. Medicare almost never pays for care outside the United States, and it covers you rather than a parent overseas. Neither California nor any federal programme funds home care in Colombo, so the arrangement is private throughout.
The escalation plan agreed at the start takes over. The carer contacts our Colombo office and the named local contact, moves your parent to the pre-agreed hospital if needed, and you receive a full written account as soon as it is safe to send.
Most placements begin within seventy-two hours of an approved care plan. Where a parent is being discharged from hospital we work to the discharge date instead.
We replace them, with no cap on replacements inside your membership year. Carers are employed by BetterHands, so a change of placement is our problem to solve.
Yes. Language is a formal matching factor alongside cooking, religious observance, temperament and medical experience, agreed before the placement begins.
BetterHands nurses are registered with Sri Lanka's Private Health Services Regulatory Council. Medicare, Medicaid and any California programme cover care delivered in the United States only. Confirm your own position with Medicare.

Half a day out of step is not the same as out of touch.
Twelve and a half hours removes the casual call entirely. There is no moment when you are both free, awake and unhurried, which is precisely when families start guessing.
A vetted carer in the house. Home nursing when the condition calls for it. A written update after every shift, on your phone before you wake rather than a call you missed.
The assessment is free and there is nothing to sign. Occasionally we tell a family their parents are managing better than expected. Either way you are no longer reconstructing a day you slept through.
